Activity of the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations of Turkmenistan

Tasks, functions and areas of work of the Ministry in the field of trade, foreign economic relations and consumer cooperation.

The Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations of Turkmenistan carries out state policy in the field of trade, foreign economic relations and consumer cooperation. In its activity it is guided by the Constitution of Turkmenistan, the Laws of Turkmenistan and other regulatory acts of the President of Turkmenistan, decisions of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, resolutions of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan and other regulatory legal acts.

The main tasks of the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations of Turkmenistan are: saturating the market with goods, products and services; improving the organization of trade services and public catering; organizing and developing wholesale and retail trade; purchasing goods, products and raw materials for industrial and technical purposes; and ensuring that state interests are upheld in the foreign market in accordance with international treaties.

The Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations of Turkmenistan:

  • Develops and implements proposals on state policy in the field of trade and foreign economic relations of Turkmenistan;
  • Saturates the market with products, goods and services, improves the organization of trade services, and disseminates advanced domestic and foreign technologies and best practices;
  • Organizes work to protect the consumer market from substandard goods and prepares relevant regulatory acts;
  • Participates in developing and implementing programs to deepen economic reforms in trade, public catering and consumer cooperation, demonopolization and the creation of a competitive environment, privatization of state trade and catering enterprises, and the development of trade;
  • Prepares proposals to stimulate market relations and entrepreneurship, and to improve the pricing, taxation and accounting systems;
  • Creates the necessary strategic reserves of food and non-food goods and industrial-purpose products;
  • Ensures that state interests are upheld in the foreign market, including obligations arising from Turkmenistan's international treaties and agreements in the field of foreign economic relations.

Cooperation with small and medium-sized business

Enterprises of the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations of Turkmenistan also work closely with representatives of small and medium-sized businesses to:

  • purchase foodstuffs at affordable prices for the population;
  • import industrial-purpose products intended for the construction of various facilities;
  • bring in raw materials for the products manufactured;
  • build facilities for producing foodstuffs (enterprises producing bakery, dairy and meat products).
It should be noted that Turkmenistan is one of the countries with a fairly narrow list of goods subject to import customs duties, which helps create favorable conditions for conducting and developing foreign trade activity.
